Nurses are an integral part of not only the NHS, but the healthcare system as a whole. They do an outstanding job in hospitals, schools, doctors’ surgeries, care homes and out in the community.
LearnOnline want to take this opportunity to celebrate nurses and thank them for all that they do.
Why 12th May?
12th May marks the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who, despite opposition from her family, felt that her calling in life was to help other people. She was proficient in history, mathematics, literature and philosophy, all of which gave her a good foundation to follow her dream.
Her most documented contribution to nursing was during the Crimean War, where she was dubbed “the Lady with the Lamp”. From modern day Istanbul, she wrote to London campaigning for better healthcare provisions for the wounded soldiers, and her efforts being well documented by the media were the first steps in her rise to fame, which enabled her to establish a school for nursing at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, which was the first secular school for nursing in the world.
