Don’t Leave It Until January: Small Study Habits That Make a Big Difference

With Christmas on the horizon, it’s tempting to think about putting your studies on hold and making a fresh start in January. But before you put those books away, a little preparation now could make a big difference to how confident and in control you feel when the New Year arrives.

Whether you’re studying for your IGCSEs or A levels, small and consistent steps can help you stay on track, reduce pressure and make your learning feel much more manageable.

Here are five simple ways to keep your studies ticking along before the Christmas break.

  1. Set yourself small, achievable targets

Looking at an entire course or a long list of assignments can feel overwhelming. Instead, break your workload into smaller tasks.

Rather than setting yourself a target of “finish Biology”, try something more specific, such as:

  • Complete one topic.
  • Spend 30 minutes reviewing a difficult subject.
  • Finish one assignment.
  • Make revision notes for a particular section.

Small achievements build momentum, and ticking things off your list can be a great motivator!

  1. Make a study routine that works for you

You don’t need to spend every spare minute studying to make progress. Finding a routine that fits around your everyday life is much more effective than creating an unrealistic timetable that you’ll struggle to stick to.

Try setting aside regular study slots during the week, even if they’re only 30–45 minutes long. Think about when you’re most productive and plan your more challenging subjects for those times.

Remember, consistency is more important than trying to do everything at once.

  1. Don’t just read – actively engage with what you’re learning

Reading through your notes repeatedly might feel productive, but there are other ways to help information stick.

Try mixing up your study techniques:

  • Test yourself using flashcards.
  • Write down everything you can remember about a topic without looking at your notes.
  • Explain a concept aloud as though you’re teaching someone else.
  • Try practice questions to check your understanding.
  • Revisit topics you found difficult rather than avoiding them.

The more actively you engage with your learning, the better you can understand what you know and identify where you need a little more practice.

  1. Keep your assignments moving

It’s easy to put assignments off, particularly when you’re finding a topic challenging. However, keeping your coursework moving helps you build confidence and avoid a backlog later in the year.

Try to set yourself regular assignment targets and allow enough time to complete work carefully.

And remember, assignments aren’t just something to tick off your list. They are an opportunity to demonstrate what you’ve learned, identify areas for improvement and receive valuable feedback from your tutor.

If you’re struggling with a question or unsure how to approach an assignment, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

  1. Plan ahead for the Christmas break

Christmas is a time to relax, spend time with family and enjoy a well-earned break. But a little planning beforehand can help you return to your studies in January feeling organised rather than overwhelmed.

Before finishing for the holidays, take a few minutes to:

  • Review what you’ve achieved so far.
  • Identify any topics you’d like to revisit.
  • Make a note of upcoming assignments or deadlines.
  • Set yourself a realistic goal for when you return.

You don’t necessarily need to study throughout the holidays. Having a clear idea of where you’re up to and what comes next can make getting back into your routine much easier.

Remember, you don’t have to do it all at once!

Studying independently takes organisation, motivation and commitment, but that doesn’t mean you have to figure everything out on your own.

At LearnOnline, our IGCSE and A level learners benefit from support from qualified, subject-specialist tutors who mark assignments, provide feedback and help guide them through their courses.
