A Level Film Studies – LearnOnline course covers the following topics:

Film History
Learners will develop knowledge of film form through the study of at least three US set films from the following times:

The Silent Era – Sunrise (1927). Directed by F.W. Murnau. USA, U
1930-1960 – Vertigo (1958). Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. USA, PG
1961-1990 – Do the Right Thing! (1989). Directed by Spike Lee. USA, 15

Learners will also study set films from two major European film movements or stylistic developments:

Experimental film (European Surrealist) – Un Chien Andalou (1929). Directed by Luis Buñuel. France, 15 and L’Age D’or (1930). Directed by Luis Buñuel. France, 15
French New Wave – À Bout de Souffle (1960). Directed by Jean-Luc Godard. France, PG

Critical Approaches to Film
Learners will further develop knowledge and understanding of key critical approaches to film and of narrative, genre, representations and spectatorship. Learners must study at least one set film from each of the categories below:

Contemporary British – Ex-Machina (2014). Directed by Alex Garland. Britain, 15
Contemporary US – Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Abrams 2015). Directed by J.J. Abrams. USA, 12
Documentary – The Stories We Tell (2013). Directed by Sarah Polley, 12
Non-European non-English language – Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001). Directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Mexico, 18
English language (non-US) – The Babadook (2014). Directed by Jennifer Kent. Australia, 15

Making Short Film
Learners must study one compilation of short British fiction films. Learners have the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills through:

the production of a 5 minute short film or a 10 minute screenplay for a short film (incorporating a digitally photographed storyboard)
an evaluative analysis of the production in relation to professionally produced set short films

Entry Requirements

Learners may not have had the opportunity to study Film at GCSE level so we recommend C or above in English or experience at studying GCSE or the equivalent with good comprehension of the English language

Learners will also study set films from two major European film movements or stylistic developments:
