What is A Level Biology A Practical Endorsement LearnOnline?

In a classroom you would gain your practical experience throughout the course and whereas it is not mandatory to obtain your practical assessment grade, it is highly recommended. We offer a week long intensive workshop in year two of your studies (the same year you take your exams).

A Level Biology Practical Endorsement covers the following topics:

In order to achieve a pass in your biology practical endorsement workshop, students will need to have met the following expectations:

Follows written procedures

Correctly follows instructions to carry out the experimental techniques or procedures.

Applies investigative approaches and methods when using instruments and equipment

Correctly uses appropriate instrumentation, apparatus and materials (including ICT) to carry out investigative activities, experimental techniques and procedures with minimal assistance or prompting.
Carries out techniques or procedures methodically, in sequence and in combination, identifying practical issues and making adjustments when necessary.
Identifies and controls significant quantitative variables where applicable, and plans approaches to take account of variables that cannot readily be controlled.
Selects appropriate equipment and measurement strategies in order to ensure suitably accurate results.

Safely uses a range of practical equipment and materials

Identifies hazards and assesses risks associated with these hazards when carrying out experimental techniques and procedures in the lab or field.
Uses appropriate safety equipment and approaches to minimise risks with minimal prompting.
Identifies safety issues and makes adjustments when necessary.

Makes and records observations

Makes accurate observations relevant to the experimental or investigative procedure.
Obtains accurate, precise and sufficient data for experimental and investigative procedures and records this methodically using appropriate units and conventions.

Researches, references and reports

Uses appropriate software and/or tools to process data, carry out research and report findings.
Sources of information are cited demonstrating that research has taken place, supporting planning and conclusions.

Entry Requirements

We recommend a GCSE grade C or above in Biology/Double Science and a strong grasp of English and Maths. We also expect you to have completed the first year of the A Level Biology course.

Biology Practical Endorsement

We recommend you attend the workshop in the second year of your studies and it only applies if you are studying for the full A Level qualification.

There are 18 core practicals that cover all of the 12 techniques required for the practical competency measure.

Knowledge of all core practicals can be tested within exam papers.
Core practicals form part of the practical competency assessment.

This was taught to a very high standard, was really good fun, and delivered a wide range of lab skills as well as an ecology trip to the sand dunes. Science Workshop, “much recommended”

The college provided the student with a spacious laboratory for biology and chemistry practical’s. The teachers are very helpful and supportive during experiment as they first go through the introduction which helped me to have a better understanding of experiment. Even though it was my first time to attend the college both teachers for chemistry and biology went through the examples before initial experiments.

All in all much recommended.
