The AS Film Studies Level LearnOnline course covers the following topics:
Elements of Film
Learners will study the development of film form through at least two Hollywood and US set films from the following time periods:
1930–1960 (Vertigo – directed by Hitchcock, 1958, certificate PG)
1961–1990 (Do the Right Thing! – directed by Spike Lee, 1989, certificate 15)
Learners will also be required to study representation and undertake a comparative contextual study of at least two set films from the following categories:
US Independent (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night – directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, 2014, certificate 15)
English language (non-US) (The Babadook, directed by Jennifer Kent, 2014, certificate 15)
Learners will also be required to study at least one European non-English language set film in relation to narrative and genre (Let the Right One In – directed by Thomas Alfredson, 2008, Sweden, certificate 15).
Understanding British Film
Learners are required to study one British set film and have the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills through:
production of either an extract from a contemporary British film or an extract from a screenplay for a contemporary British film (incorporating a digitally photographed storyboard) (Ex-Machina – directed by Alex Garland, 2014, certificate 15).
The learner will also evaluative analysis of the production.
